Give women back their loo

Gender neutral toilets and George Bernard Shaw

George Bernard Shaw

• ONE of your correspondents asked when the ladies’ toilets at the bottom of Parkway, in Camden Town, became “gender neutral”, (On gender-neutral public loos, March 31).

The letter also questioned who at Camden Council made the decision and asked was there even a public consultation?

The historic (now former) ladies’ loo is across the road from the gents’ loo which remains unchanged; there is also a pop-up urinal in the next corner. So plenty of other provision for men, while women have to share this one and only women’s loo.

The Equality and Human Rights Commission published clear guidance on the law for the providers of single-sex services on April 4 2022, to help providers, such as local authorities, make lawful decisions on single-sex provision.

In light of the new guidance from the EHRC I expect Camden Council to now revise their policies for single-sex services and spaces in their hostels, refuges, counselling groups, public toilets and changing rooms.

Women need the support in Camden again of someone like George Bernard Shaw, who successfully campaigned for women’s public toilet provision in the then borough of St Pancras (before women could vote).

Camden should start their support with giving women back their loo in Parkway. Why should women sacrifice their safety, dignity and privacy?
