Give us a break from all the noise

Thursday, 2nd February 2023

• IN response to Adrian Betham’s letter (How can people cope with six weeks of very noisy work? January 26), Chalcots estate six weeks of noise? You should be so lucky!

We who live in the Victorian terraced row in Winchester Road have suffered a decade of abominable noise, both transmitted airborne and structurally, for 10 long years while the developer, Essential Living constructs the “not wanted by anyone” (4,000 local objections) 100 Avenue Road monstrosity tower block.

We had, until the present hold up, and it’s likely to start again this summer, unbearable noise regularly from 8am to 6pm, every Monday to Friday, and 8am to 1pm Saturdays.

Saturday afternoons and Sundays were our most desperately needed respite hours, yet Camden events team happily gave groups the opportunity to celebrate with loud music whatever was wanted for celebration regardless of how precious those noise-free respite hours had become for us.

Yes, Chalcot residents have also booked celebrations in the Swiss Cottage open space, when we were so desperate for peace and quiet. Yet they have their own extensive gardens on which to have events.

When building resumes on 100 Avenue Road, we kindly ask for respect from Chalcots residents, ward councillors, and Camden events department, and ask that they allow us respite on Saturday afternoons and Sundays from any form of noise.
