A TRIUMPHANT team of footballers from Islington are within touching distance of playing in the finals of a prestigious national competition.

Girls from St Mary Magdalene Academy (pictured) will be taking part in a series of tough-tackling heats in March, where they will be bidding for the right to line up in the grand finals of the English Schools Football Association’s Inter-Schools Cup.

Led by top scorer Amy Nash, the skilful side from Holloway qualified for the regional heats after winning the President’s Cup in January.

After watching her team lift the trophy with five straight victories, manager Kerry Gray said, “It was an outstanding performance from all the girls in the team.

“They displayed some quality football and great sportsmanship, and are a credit to St Mary Magdalene Academy.”
