Mercury Prize-nominated Maps, aka James Chapman, presents the London premiere of his impressionistic new album Colours. Reflect. Time. Loss. in the intimate Purcell Room. This gig is a rare opportunity to experience Maps’ new work live – the album took Maps three years to produce and involved working with The Echo Collective chamber ensemble, guest vocalists and percussionists from across the world.

NEW MUSIC BIENNIAL

Friday 5 July – Sunday 7 July 2018, various times and venues, Free

A celebration of new music from the UK’s most talented composers and musicians, the New Music Biennial returns to Southbank Centre this summer for its fourth installment. A PRS Foundation initiative presented in partnership with Southbank Centre, Absolutely Cultured (Hull), BBC Radio 3 and NMC Recordings, the festival presents a snapshot of contemporary music in the UK across all genres from classical to world music, jazz, folk, electronic and even music for ice cream vans. The free weekend-long festival includes 15 world premieres from UK-based composers and artists including Gazelle Twin, Max de Wardener, Forest Swords, Klein and Sona Jobarteh alongside five pre-existing works composed within the last 15 years from composers and artists including Shiva Feshareki and Aidan O’Rourke.

JANE WEAVER

One of Europe’s most inspiring independent female performers and one of the architects of current progressive pop music, Jane Weaver, brings her experimental new show Loops in the Secret Society to Southbank Centre as part of her first solo tour in over five years. Loops in the Secret Society is a sense-stimulating journey featuring solo variations of songs from Weaver’s critically acclaimed albums The Silver Globe and Modern Kosmology to create unique atmospheric audio/visual concerts.

RICK WAKEMAN’S JOURNEY TO THE CENTRE OF THE EARTH

To celebrate his 70th birthday, the former Yes keyboard player Rick Wakeman performs the final UK performance of his epic orchestral rock piece. This concept work originally premiered at Royal Festival Hall in January 1974 with the live recording released three months later becoming a landmark record in the history of progressive rock, selling over 15 million copies. As well as his association with Yes, Wakeman has enjoyed a long, successful career as a solo artist and with his band the English Rock Ensemble.

PLANNINGTOROCK: POWERHOUSE

Outspoken and fearless dance producer Planningtorock brings the UK premiere of their new album Powerhouse to Southbank Centre’s Queen Elizabeth Hall this July. Planningtorock’s fearless brand of pop explores love, queerness, gender identities, survival and how music can be a powerful force of liberation, strength and healing. This performance of Powerhouse promises an intimate exploration of biographical anthems drawn from Planningtorock’s experiences as a non-binary genderqueer artist. It coincides with the summer exhibition at Hayward Gallery: Kiss My Genders, celebrating more than 30 international artists whose work explores and engages with gender identity. The exhibition’s title is taken from the song ‘Transome’ by Planningtorock.

THE HOT SARDINES

Jazz collective the Hot Sardines return to London as part of their world tour, bringing their effortless style to the intimate Purcell Room. The charismatic front-runners of vintage jazz channel New York speakeasies, Parisian cabarets and New Orleans jazz halls in their live shows, and have gone from performing at underground Brooklyn parties to festival crowds of 25,000. This performance promises to bring attitude, style and 1930s cabaret to Southbank Centre.

VILLAGE GREEN PRESENTS: IMMERSION

Village Green curate an exclusive evening with some of the most forward thinking modern composers working in the UK & Europe today. The independent record label hand-pick three of their most genre-defying acts – CUTS, Ben Chatwin and Snow Palms – for a one-off performance of soaring synthscapes with spectral ambient textures and propulsive rhythms. CUTS (composer and filmmaker Anthony Tombling Jr.) performs from his newly-released album, A Gradual Decline, written in response to global political and environmental breakdown and released alongside a series of films which form an integral part of the evening’s performance. Composer and producer Ben Chatwin performs from his acclaimed albums Staccato Signals and Drone Signals, using analogue and modular synths alongside live strings, whilst David Sheppard and Matt Gooderson combine as Snow Palms to create evocative juxtapositions, pitching mallet instruments against chamber orchestra arrangements.

TREVOR HORN LIVE

Following a spectacular concert in Queen Elizabeth Hall in November last year, award-winning pop producer and founding member of The Buggles, Trevor Horn returns with songs from his recent hit album Trevor Horn Reimagines The Eighties. A night showcasing the best in queer (LGBTQI+) culture, featuring dance and music. The Raze Collective presents a line-up of the most exciting musicians, singer-songwriters, electronic artists, dancers and DJs around today. The Raze Collective was established in response to the closure of many long-standing queer venues to support, develop, nurture and protect queer performance in the UK by bringing together different aspects of the community, including producers, promoters, directors, venue owners, academics and audience members.

PECS DRAG KINGS

Southbank Centre presents a bumper Pride party on the Riverside Terrace. Presented by Pxssy Palace in collaboration with BBZ, the party features electrifying music and performance until the early hours. Pxssy Palace is a collective of DJs, educators and performers that centres queer and trans people of colour. BBZ (Bold Brazen Zamis or Babes) is a club night and curatorial collective prioritising the experiences of queer women, trans and non-binary people of colour.

THE BATTY MAMA

The Batty Mama is a down and dirty, open and enticing dystopic space for queer and trans bodies and Black and Brown, queer, QTIPOC and LGBTQI+ identifying people. Over three Thursday evenings in July, the south London collective’s DJs provide old-school summer anthems and all the classics from the 1990s onward with sets bursting with R&B, hip-hop, garage, Afrobeats, bashment and funky house.

BBZ TAKEOVER

Raised and based in south-east London, BBZ (Bold Brazen Zamis or Babes) throw a party exploring all mediums including interactive installations, sound, poetry, archive, celebratory communion, photography, illustration and film. Headed by co-founders Naeem Davis and Tia Simon-Campbell, BBZ is a club night and multi-disciplinary collective of queer black artists, prioritising the experiences of queer women, trans and non-binary people of colour.
