• GENESIS Housing Association is continuing its attack on residents. Genesis is making applications to the Rent Officer for high rent rises to old-style secure tenants – one recent is just over 90 per cent.

Secure tenants are those who had their tenancies before 1989 so they are all likely to be retired and not in a position to look for work to make up the difference. Assured tenants (post 1989) are also facing rent rises. Genesis is clearly going for deregulation of government control of rents. Genesis made secret submissions to the National Housing Federation (the association for the CEOs of housing associations). Genesis excluded residents from seeing the submissions. Genesis said the “current [rent] system… is not fit for purpose. [The submissions] are not a settled policy position and there has not been any resident input.”

Meanwhile Genesis builds luxury flats. And they need more money to build luxury flats. Genesis want to force up the rents so they can borrow more on the private money markets.
