Women’s toilets in Camden Town

• WHEN George Bernard Shaw was a vestryman on St Pancras Council he championed the right for women to have a public toilet provided by that council.

The loos in the centre of Camden Town were recently refurbished. However the Ladies one seems to be closed a lot. Why? Are attendants’ wages so high they are unaffordable, or so low that no one will work there?

That well-known playwright Shakespeare composed the line “for this relief much thanks”. I see a stand-alone plastic urinal at Chalk Farm on the way to Morrisons. Great for the boyos, but what about the ladies?

Give Camden credit for being one of the few councils to provide some loos. Is the man obsessed, some may exclaim, writing such a letter.

One of the many trials of old age is the need for such a facility. The pub owner at the entry to Queen’s Crescent warns his loo is only for customers. At one time each pub had a urinal built alongside in the open air – no door.

A well-known photographer sought to impress a model by telling her “At Eton the lavs had no doors”. “How did the pupils get in?” she asked.

Enough now – ladies who can manage the steps get your council to fix the Parkway thingy pronto.
