PLAYERS applauded in admiration at the weekend when Jacob Bond scored a contender for goal-of-the-season to help champions Cobden Athletic beat London Badgers in the top flight of the Camden Sunday League.
At full stretch the midfielder dinked the ball over the retreating full back before unleashing a dipping left-foot volley into the top corner, à la Paul Gascoigne against Scotland during Euro ’96.
Manager Dave Willis purred after the game, “In 24 years I have never seen a goal like it, a moment of pure genius.”
Despite the praise the wonder strike wasn’t enough to earn Bond the man-of-the-match accolade, with that honour instead going to two-goal hero Winston Fowler. Kaleb King was also on target as The Cons ran out 4-1 winners.
In Division Two, Highbury Town extended their unbeaten run to six games with a 3-0 victory over Auld Shillelagh. Two goals from Ash Frazer sandwiched Alex Gill’s header as Town extended their lead at the top of the table to six points.
Newcomers Clerkenwell Old Boys made it three wins in four games with a resounding 7-0 victory over AFC Brasenose. Danny Byrne helped himself to a superb hat-trick, while Jamie Salvoni chipped in with two goals. Jessie Courtney and Harvey Ferguson-Boon also both found the back of the net.
In Division Three, newcomers St Peter’s celebrated their first win not only of the season, but in their history when they triumphed 4-2 over MKA East.
Trailing at the break, the men in yellow battled back to record a historic victory thanks to goals from Mek Mesfin, Dan Stone, Matt Lovitt and Daniel Bagguley.
