‘Frozen’ fares masking bus cuts

Friday, 7th February 2020

• THE cost of London mayor Sadiq Khan’s frozen “pay-as-you-go” single fares dawned on me after many miserable waits for the 31 bus to Swiss Cottage which I have used since 1994.

My Freedom of Information request has just revealed that the six minutes frequency before 2017 was cut to one every 10 minutes from June 2018. That is from 10 to six buses an hour, a vicious reduction.

For daily passengers it means 20 minutes’ extra waiting time per week, 15 hours a year, plus very overcrowded buses. This change was not advertised by the mayor.

I bet the same has been happening on most bus routes across Camden to pay for the headline-grabbing fare freeze.
