Chipping in: Teams from across Camden and Islington join in The Palestine Cup at Market Road to show their support for the campaign

THE goal to raise funds to bring a young group of footballers from Palestine to London is “edging closer” after organisers held a special cup competition at Market Road in Islington.

Members from the Camden and Regent’s Park Youth League signed up teams to take part in the Under-11s Palestine Cup, with all the proceeds going towards the £7,000 target needed to help cover the costs of a 10-day trip.

A team of 12 boys from Abu Dis have been invited to join local teams for training sessions and tournaments.

Overall the venture will cost £20,000 but with £13,000 already in the bag the quest is well underway.

League co-ordinator Will Cave said: “The tournament proved a huge success and raised more than £400 for the cause. Even more importantly it helped raise awareness and people have been very kindly donating what they can.

“We wanted to bring the boys over in July, but we’re not going to make that target now. But we’re hoping with a little more generosity we’ll have them here by September, which ties in nicely with the start of the new season in the Camden and Regent’s Park Youth League so that they can train with the teams and play friendlies.”
