FA Cup Semi-final
Liverpool 2, Everton 1
by STEVE BARNETT at Wembley
TOTTENHAM players were given a timely reminder on the eve of their FA Cup semi-final against Chelsea that the result at Wembley is far more important than the performance.
This afternoon (Saturday) Andy Carroll scored a dramatic late winner as Liverpool came from behind to defeat neighbouring rivals Everton 2-1 to reach the final.
The gladiatorial music that beckoned the players on to the pitch was quickly drowned out by the deafening Merseyside roar. But in truth, a fixture that always produces great passion lacked any real quality, and will be remembered more for the mistakes that decided the game than the skill.
Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish didn't seem too concerned about his side's display as they secured their third visit of the season to Wembley.
"I think it was fantastic and although it's not been too good in the league recently, that's two cup finals," he said. "One we've won and one we're looking forward to.
"That gives everybody who supports Liverpool Football Club a lift. We're very proud and pleased that we're in the final."
Liverpool started well, creating the first real chance after just three minutes when Carroll cut the ball back to Jay Spearing, who shot harmlessly over the bar.
Everton, however, were gifted the lead on 24 minutes when sloppy defending between Martin Skrtel and Jamie Carragher allowed Nikica Jelavic to net his sixth goal since signing from Rangers in January.
Carragher's poor attempted clearance cannoned back off Tim Cahill and into the path of Jelavic, who finished coolly to send the blue half of Wembley into raptures.
The anticipated response from Liverpool never came and they struggled to test Everton through the remainder of the half. A long-range effort from Steven Gerrard which was way off target was the best Dalglish's side could muster.
It was a different story after the break, however, as Liverpool started with far more purpose.
They should have levelled on 47 minutes only for Carroll to send a downward header yards wide after an inch-perfect cross from Stewart Downing.
Just when it seemed Everton had withstood the early onslaught, Liverpool were level largely thanks to a howling mistake from Sylvain Distin.
The Toffees' defender underhit his backpass to Tim Howard and Luis Suarez raced through on goal before poking his finish under the American keeper.
Carroll should have done better but dragged a low shot wide on 78 minutes, while at the other end Jelavic briefly raised Everton hopes when his shot flew into the side netting.
With extra-time looming Everton substitute Seamus Coleman brought down Gerrard wide on the left wing.
Liverpool sub Craig Bellamy chipped in a perfectly flighted effort and Carroll got the faintest of touches to head home the winner.
