ARSENE Wenger praised his team’s growing confidence after watching them snatch a late winner against Marseille last night (Wednesday) in the Champions League.

The victory in France means the Gunners are now on the brink of qualifying for the knockout stages of Europe’s premier club competition after maintaining their unbeaten start in Group F.

Super-sub Aaron Ramsey came off the bench to fire the Gunners to the top of their group with a last-gasp winner at the Stade Velodrome.

The Wales captain smashed the ball into the bottom corner in the 92nd minute after Gervinho had failed to control Johan Djourou’s cross.

And having seen his team take seven points from their opening three games, a rejuvinated Wenger said: “It was an important goal for qualification and for confidence.

“It was pleasing that we remained focused and showed patience. We go from game to game and we’re growing slowly.”
Match-winner Ramsey said after the game: “I thought we defended really well tonight. It was nice to score the winning goal.

“It’s a great achievement to come away from home and get the win.”

Despite having their fair share of the possession Arsenal looked like they were going to leave with just a point.

In a game of few chances, Robin van Persie saw his header cleared off the line midway through the first half.

Theo Walcott squandered a glorious chance shortly after the hour mark when he fired a tame shot at Marseille keeper Steve Mandanda from eight yards.

Van Persie went close again in the final seconds of normal time with a snap-shot from close range, but again Mandanda was equal to the effort.

With the game seemingly heading for a stalemate, Ramsey’s late run into the box paid off as he snatched all three points for Arsenal.
