SCORES of triumphant young footballers are reflecting on their silverware success now that another thrilling season in the Camden and Islington Midweek Youth League has come to a close.
But for two players from Regent’s Park FC, the joy is tinged with sadness – as the final whistle in their cup game at Market Road also signalled the end of an era.
Vetan Derguti, 15, and Josh Keen, 14, (pictured) soaked up the celebrations as they helped guide their team to a 3-0 victory over Westway to win the Under-15s Challenge Cup.
The triumph marked their final appearance for the club as next season they will be too old to play in the youth league.
Vetan, who joined Regent’s Park when he was just 10 years old, admitted that the occasion had been emotional.
“I feel sad because I have so many good memories of playing for the club,” he said.
“I’ll never forget when we won the league three seasons ago and I scored the winning header.
“But I have to look to the future now, I am hoping I can get scouted.”
The team came agonisingly close to securing a league and cup double but ultimately missed out on the title by just one point.
“We won our game and had to wait on the other result,” the Haverstock pupil added. “We heard right at the last minute that they had it, it was so disappointing.”
