A TOP five-a-side league is vowing to beat the cuts and continue with their goal of helping talented young footballers with their development.

The Talacre Play Centre League is being forced to ring the changes for the first time in 25 years as funding cuts to after- school facilities continues to wipe out the teams who regularly take part in the action in Kentish Town.

However, organiser Lloyd Heath is determined he’s not about to blow the final whistle on the league and is calling for teams across Camden and Islington to bolster the numbers ahead of September’s next big kick-off.

“It’s the first major shake-up since we launched back in the late 1980s because the teams who usually take part simply won’t be there.

“No matter what happens, we’re going to make sure that we’re offering youngsters a chance for development with competitive league and cup competitions.

“We would love to hear from any teams who think they have the capabilities of reaching our home pitch in Wilkin Street in time for kick-off – with games between 4pm and 6pm.”

Teams were celebrating on Thursday as they collected their trophies following another fantastic season in the league. The Talacre Colts were the big winners as the won a league and cup double. Club-mates Talacre FC finished as runners-up in the cup, while Three Acres FC were runners-up in the league.

There was also a special mention for Kentish Town Primary School FC, who were voted the most improved team.
