FIGHTERS from St Pancras Amateur Boxing Club have uncovered a new secret that they are hoping will help them pack an extra punch or two when the new season gets underway in September.

The club has struck up a deal with Bikram Yoga North in Queen’s Crescent, which is a five minute walk from their gym in Talacre Road, Kentish Town.

Considering the rigorous training sessions that boxers undertake it might seem crazy to add 90-minute sessions of postures and breathing exercises in a room heated to around 105°F (40.6°C).

But Saints coach CJ Hussein is adamant that his squad of bikram boxers will feel the benefits when those extra rounds kick in.

“Most boxing fans probably don’t realise the importance of stretching. The strains and stresses that a fighter puts their muscles through during training is unbelievable, so having something that helps aid recovery is 100 per cent beneficial.

“Another bonus is that when boxers get televised fights the heat generated by the lights and a fully-packed arena can be overwhelming, but bikram yoga will help them acclimatise.”

Senior bikram teacher Michele Pernetta, a former pupil at Camden School for Girls, use to train in Hapkido, Taekwondo and kickboxing so knows all about the benefits it can offer top athletes.

“I began teaching because I was so keen for people to know that many sports injuries can be healed through yoga.

“So when we discovered we had this lovely boxing gym right around the corner, and some of their boxers were coming already, we decided to strike up a collaboration.

“Training in the hot room gives boxers an edge as they become used to working hard in a hot environment, meaning they do not get as tired as their opponent.”

Michele added: “Creating a strong, loose, aligned body is an asset for any sportsman. Most sports are not symmetrical and can, over time, cause an imbalance in the body, and yoga can fix this by regularly bringing alignment to all the joints and muscles.

“I am a huge fan of sports, especially martial arts and boxing, and love having sportsmen bringing their energy, dedication, and hard working natures to the studio. It’s inspiring to see.

“I would also be very happy if some of our students take up boxing, as it is a great combination with yoga, as the two use breath, energy, power and focus to bring discipline and stress release to the body and mind.”
