Fight for the rights of EU citizens living in this country
Monday, 27th February 2017

MP Keir Starmer
• ON Monday I helped launch the EU Right to Stay lobby in parliament, jointly organised by Unison, the3million and New Europeans.
The lobby calls on the prime minister unilaterally to guarantee the rights of EU citizens living in the UK.
There are about 3.3million EU citizens living in the UK and, following the referendum, many are uncertain about their status and anxious about their future.
In Holborn & St Pancras we are lucky to have so many EU nationals and I have heard first-hand about their concerns in my surgeries, in my public meetings, and from the very many conversations I have had with residents in our streets as I go about constituency business. These are valued members of our communities, our neighbours, our friends and our colleagues. They should be treated as such; not as bargaining chips.
I recognise that UK citizens in the EU are also anxious about their future; but from the joint statement that I read out in parliament on Monday from UK citizens living in Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg and Spain, it is clear that they support the lobby for the prime minister to take unilateral action to protect EU citizens here.
If any constituents want support or advice on these issues, I am happy to provide it and can be contacted at keir.starmer. mp@parliament.uk or 020 7219 6234.
I will also continue to champion this campaign in parliament and hope the government finally recognise the need to take decisive action to support EU citizens in the UK”.
