Families are struggling to cover housing costs and bills
Thursday, 3rd August 2023
• AT every constituency surgery I hear from families who are struggling with the cost of living crisis.
As inflation remains high and wages fall behind, families across Hampstead and Kilburn are finding it difficult to cover housing costs and bills, all while working harder, paying more, and getting less.
I continue to push the government to listen to those crying out for a change and for robust action to tackle the current crisis.
But all we’ve seen from the Tories is inaction in tackling this financial disaster of their own making, having crashed the economy and succeeded only in delivering the highest tax burden in 70 years.
It isn’t just rising inflation that the government has failed to bring under control. Over the last decade owning a home has become an impossible dream for so many.
And for those already on the property ladder, that dream is fast becoming a nightmare because of the Tory mortgage bombshell – a premium that homeowners are paying as a result of the mismanagement of the economy.
Rising mortgage rates are the last thing families need with the cost of food and energy so high, and I’ve been working with my Labour colleagues to push the government to bring forward a package of mandatory mortgage measures to make sure lenders are doing all they can to help borrowers through this crisis.
This includes requiring lenders to allow borrowers to lengthen their mortgage period and to wait up to six months before initiating repossession proceedings, something I have sadly come across far too often in the course of my work in the constituency.
Things don’t have to be this way, and that’s why I’ve been urging ministers to implement Labour’s plan to lower bills and support families who face rising costs on all fronts.
In the current crisis I know many constituents are struggling to get help. If there is anything I can do to help please do get in touch with me at tulip.siddiq.mp@parliament.uk or by phone on 020 8127 5525.
