Excavation of collapsed pipes is a major upheaval
Thursday, 10th January 2019
• THE chaos that is ensuing caused by the excavation of collapsed pipes at the top of Fleet Road lasting from November is dangerous and appalling.
The disturbance caused is massive: bus diversions, ambulances stuck for a long time, tailbacks to the top of Pond Street, to the bottom of Fleet Road, way up East Heath Road and Parliament Hill.
It was rumoured that the works would be finished by December 8, but here we are faced a new year with no sign of this work being finished.
There has been no weekend work. Nothing, of course, over the Christmas period and when workers did return on December 28 they had packed up and gone home by 3.30pm even though there was still daylight. One pedestrian crossing at the top of Fleet Road has been given crossing lights, but very few people heed them.
There are no crossing lights set up on the three remaining crossings, hence when there is a green light and cars can move they are held up by pedestrians crossing which naturally angers the car drivers who have had to sit waiting for a substantially long time, especially at the crossing outside Hampstead Heath Overground, which is always extremely busy and incidentally should have permanent traffic lights.
Why were residents not informed that this damage was going to take such an inordinately long time to repair? Why did not Transport for London publicly announce that buses would be diverted? Why do not Camden Council involve themselves and sack the construction company and replace them and get this job finished?
This state of affairs cannot be allowed to continue. Maybe Camden councillors would like to come around and inspect this sad state of affairs which they seemingly are ignoring.
This is a major upheaval and the lack of thought, care and consideration for the general public, the majority of whom are Camden council tax-payers, beggars belief.
It would be appreciated if Camden Council would respond to this letter and inform us of what actually is going on.
