Camden Elite, along with parents who travelled to France, celebrate winning the Europa League Cup

A SQUAD of wannabe pro footballers enjoyed an Easter getaway to remember as they returned from the south of France this week clutching their first-ever piece of silverware.

Young players from Camden Elite were all smiles when they landed back at Stansted in the early hours of Monday morning as winners of the Europa League Cup – part of the France Mediterranean Cup competition which was held at the Stade Zizou Vidal in Lespignan.

The Under-11s side, who play in the Camden & Islington Youth League at Market Road, successfully navigated their way through a tough group without losing a single game. They went on to overcome French club AS Gresivaudan 2-0 in the semi-finals, with Taha Jaouadi opening the scoring before Tristan Henry wrapped up the win from the penalty spot.

Elite then beat RWDM Molenbeek from Belgium 1-0 in the final thanks to a stunning strike from Dani A – the midfielder collecting the ball from Huxley Jackson before curling a shot into the top corner from all of 25 yards.

Centre-back Roman Kendel was among the standout performers singled out by coach Jordan Lawal, who said the defender was Elite’s player of the final following “an unbelievable display” in which he controlled the game from the back.

Captain Ari Driza was also praised for his leadership skills.

“The boys were incredible, everyone at Camden Elite is so, so proud of them,” Jordan added.

“They played some fantastic football and really deserved to come home with the trophy.

“The trip was a real bonding experience for all the players both on and off the pitch.

“The thing that I’ll take away with me the most is the chemistry that they showed. The togetherness that they had throughout the tournament really stood out. We already knew they were a close group, but to see that bond grow stronger and stronger by the day was really impressive.”

Adding a shout-out to the sidelines, Jordan said: “We also want to thank all our parents who came along to support the boys.

“They were fantastic, cheering us on in every game. With the parents from the other clubs also making a lot of noise and banging drums, it made for a great atmosphere.”

Elite’s Under-12s also took part in the competition, playing up an age group in the Under-13s category, and “gaining plenty of valuable experience” despite missing out on the medals.
