Eric, a year flies by but we will not forget him

First anniversary of CNJ editor's death

Friday, 8th April

Eric Gordon in the office

ALL the staff at the Camden New Journal this week pay our condolences to the family and friends of Eric Gordon – our formidable co-founder and editor for nearly 40 years, who passed away a year ago on Tuesday.

We lit a candle for the man who did so much to make sure Camden had a campaigning community voice.

The newspaper, which celebrated its 40th anniversary last month, was created out of strike action as Eric and his colleagues fought back against attempts to sack staff and close down newspapers in north London.

Eric Gordon in his younger years

He kept on in the editor’s chair until his death at 89 – still writing his waspish but incisive Gulliver column until his final days.

People may not have agreed with everything he wrote, but they respected how he opened these pages to all, providing space for vital public debate and scrutiny.

Through tough times, that ambition lives on in the team he left behind.
