IT may have been five decades since Enrico Sidoli died – but the New Journal proved this week that the 15-year-old has never been forgotten.

Our feature on the painful anniversary of his murder at the Parliament Hill Lido led to scores of people lamenting the failure of the police to bring charges against anybody and many remembering being at the pool on the day of the tragedy.

Enrico, who lived with his family in Kentish Town, lost consciousness and suffered brain damage after being held under the water by three teenage boys or young men.

Despite the Lido being crowded with people trying to cool off from the 1976 July heatwave, detectives said they were faced with a ‘wall of silence’ over many years.

A 16-year-old was arrested and then released at the time, and a man traced to Germany in the 1980s was also questioned without charge.

The New Journal marked the 50th anniversary with another appeal for anybody with information to contact the cold case unit at the Met – but our feature was also aimed at showing that Enrico’s life had not been forgotten despite the passing of time.

Readers responded on our social media channels with vivid memories about how the case had affected them, remembering how police visited school assemblies and how people felt wary about returning to the pool for the rest of that famously hot summer.

But although so many people over 60 remember the murder on the news, detectives still need somebody to come forward with new information in order to reopen the files.

They have never been able to identify a potential key witness at the pool, pictured in a grainy black and white photograph taken on the day.

It was re-released after the New Journal raised the case on the 40th anniversary of Enrico’s death in 2016.

The killer – or killers – were believed to be local at the time, and would likely be in their mid-60s if still alive today.

Those who think they can help should contact the police, even if the information seems a small detail.
