Kane and Walcott bag half the goals as England smash San Marino

NORTH London provided half the goals as England claimed a predictably easy win against San Marino this evening (Saturday).

After England had led at half-time through a dubiously-earned early penalty converted by Wayne Rooney and an own-goal, Harry Kane emerged from the subs bench to reassure Spurs fans that he has not lost his goalscoring boots after goal-shy start to the Premier League season. He came up with a delightful chipped finish amid a blitz of second half goals.

Theo Walcott hit the target twice

Walcott was just too hot for San Marino

His strike was sandwiched between two Theo Walcott goals, with the Arsenal forward tapping into an open goal for his first and executing a confident slide finish for his second. The Gunners’ Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain was also of use to Roy Hodgson’s team, whipping the cross that gave Everton’s Ross Barkley the chance to get on the scoresheet with a header. The headlines went to Rooney, however, whose spot kick goal meant he equalled Sir Bobby Charlton’s record of 49 goals for the national team. He may go one better when he has the chance to score against Switzerland at Wembley next week.

Harry Kane shows he hasn't forgotten where the goal is

“It's a proud moment,” the Man United striker said. “My aim is to push on and try and help the team win on Tuesday and break the record. It would have been great if the record had happened tonight. Obviously the tradition of Wembley and to break the record at Wembley would be great."
