Electric cars may not be the best idea to improve the roads and beat pollution

• CAMDEN was a traffic-ridden, polluted area even when I was a student living near King’s Cross in the 1960s.

So it is heartening to see Councillor Oliver Cooper calling for action to tackle pollution from road traffic, (Camden needs to follow the Tories’ lead on installing electric charging points, March 22).

But I am suspicious about his call for more charging points for electric vehicles. Electric cars are still a danger to pedestrians and cyclists, take up too much road space, emit particles from brakes and tyres and cause pollution where the electricity is generated.

A much more effective way to tackle the problems of road traffic would be to encourage the use of electric bicycles, but the charging points I’ve seen do not cater for either electric bikes or mobility scooters.

Good clean public transport and more space for pedestrians and cyclists are also better solutions to road traffic problems.

There are plenty of appalling junctions throughout Camden where road traffic (including electric vehicles) needs to be tamed and vulnerable road users given more consideration.
