Arsenal set to announce more signings in coming days

EDDIE Nketiah will wear Thierry Henry’s iconic number 14 shirt after finally signing a new long-term contract at Arsenal.

The 23-year old, who was due to be out of contract at the end of this month, was in electrifying form for the Gunners at the end of last season, scoring five goals in eight matches as the north Londoners finished fifth to secure a return to European football.

With his squad for the new campaign starting to take shape, Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta told the club’s website: “I’m delighted Eddie is staying with us. He represents what we are all about and all the values of the club.

“We are very happy that he has extended his contract and now we have to get to work and continue to develop the great talent and person that we have in him.”

Nketiah joined Arsenal at the age of 14 after being released by Chelsea. He has since made 92 first-team appearances for the Gunners, scoring 23 goals since his first-team debut in 2017.

The striker is also England Under-21s all-time top scorer with 16 goals in 17 appearances, and captained his country when they won the 2021 European Under-21 Championships.

Arsenal have not disclosed the length of Nketiah’s new deal, but it’s believed to be a five-year deal, with reports that he’s now earning £100,000-a-week plus bonuses.

Arsenal technical director Edu said: “The foundations of this squad are built on young talent and in particular those who have come through our Academy system.

“Eddie was released by another club as a young man but has always shown he has the attitude as well as the ability to become a top player.

“The fact he’s signed a new contract is an important part of our squad planning for next season and we’re all delighted.”

Arsenal have confirmed that Nketiah, who has worn number 30 in the last three seasons, will change to 14 next season. The number has been vacant since Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s exit in January and was also famously donned by club legend Henry.

Arsenal are expected to announce more big news in the coming days.

Porto confirmed yesterday (Friday) a deal to sell Fabio Vieira to the Gunners for £34m including add-ons.

Vieira, a highly-rated midfielder who recorded a league-high 14 assists in the Primeira Liga last season to help Porto win the title, will become Arsenal’s third summer signing following goalkeeper Matt Turner and winger Marquinhos.

Arsenal are yet to announce the signing but Vieira was understood to have been in north London this week for a medical.
