Don’t call this a cul-de-sac!

• NO doubt members of the Camden planning department might have been expecting the following comment concerning the sign installed at the junction of Inverness Street and Gloucester Crescent, informing motorists travelling east from the crescent to Arlington Road via Inverness Street that the route is a cul-de-sac.

This is a misuse of the term. Why not “no entry” or would this be too authoritarian for our liberal council?

The term cul-de-sac in plain English means dead end or a route leading nowhere. In this case neither definition is true especially for those who have used this route since its inception and can see access leading somewhere beyond.

I experience further evidence of institutional ineptitude in morning walks on Primrose Hill where I continue to be irritated by Gloucester Crescent being described on the official map as Gloucester Terrace.

The misuse of the sign for cul-de-sac is further evidence of such official laziness.
