Dogs on the Heath are of concern
Friday, 28th June 2019
• I WAS heartened to read I am not the only one who is disturbed by dogs on Hampstead Heath, (Let’s have a dog-free day on the Heath, June 20).
I would go further than dog-free days and have dog-enclosures being the only place dogs could be let off the lead.
It seems that the City of London puts dogs before people and the wildlife it claims to preserve. I have seen as many as 20 dogs with only two handlers running about loose.
This suggests there are professional dog walkers who use it as a place to conduct their business.
When dogs are let loose, whether in a pack or just one, they can injure and frighten people by jumping up, and bumping into you when they are chasing a ball or another dog.
This happened to me in a north London park when a dog running towards another dog knocked me over. I was flipped over backwards and hit my head on the concrete path behind and left unconscious.
I was taken to hospital, with concussion, but it took some time for the ambulance to arrive because it had difficulty accessing the inner part of the park. My neck and arm was in a sling for several weeks afterwards.
I hope that something is done about letting dogs loose on the Heath because I for one am unable to enjoy it until such time as they are kept on the lead and safely enclosed.
