Does protest need chaos and confusion?

Thursday, 10th November 2022

• WHAT we need is someone to invent a new type of protest, a protest that makes those in power stand up, listen and immediately implement radical change.

An extremely effective and efficient protest, but one that doesn’t affect or inconvenience a single ordinary person in the slightest possible way.

I’m broadly in agreement with David Reed’s proposal to increase all private motoring costs (Get out of your cars, November 3), but was disappointed to see another person join Sir Keir Starmer in condemning the actions of the climate protesters.

Yes, it causes chaos and confusion. Yes, it impacts ordinary people’s lives, but I struggle to think of incidents of major progress and societal change that were achieved without any of that.

As much as I would love politicians to pick up policies from the letters section of the CNJ and implement them, I do fear it’ll take a little more than that to get them to act.
