Do developers see Camden as a soft touch?

• READING yet another reported outcome of the recent planning committee, one wonders if there are too many items on the agenda which cause the meetings to run well into the night with less scrutiny and, as stated in your report, leading some items to go straight to vote.
It was disheartening once again to see developers being given the green light to proceed on projects “without making any contribution to affordable housing at all”. One wonders if some developers see Camden as a soft touch.
Should there be a more robust scrutiny factored in to each application and conditions incumbent on the developer that any developments planned to run into millions must include affordable housing?
The committee have recently given the green light to proceed with two homeless families’ hostels, being Chester Road and Camden Road. These will largely be studio accommodation and families could well be living in them for one to two years.
As there is a huge waiting list of families looking for a place to call home, should we not be fighting to give them this right by insisting that developers fulfil their obligation to the community by providing affordable homes?
Who has the ultimate power in the decision-making and where does the common good lie?
