VETERAN potter Des Murphy caused one of the biggest upsets in recent history when he beat Roy Cooper in the Chalk Farm Pool League Seniors Cup on Monday.

The crowd that had gathered at Peckwater Tenants Association Social Club in Kentish Town were stunned into silence when Murphy, who plays for Boston Rimmers, pocketed a 3-2 victory in the semi-finals against reigning champ Cooper, who has won the title six times in the last seven years.

Murphy will now play George Larner in a best-of-five-frame final at the Boston Arms in Tufnell Park in June.

Also in action that night will be Kevin Howard and Danny Fry, who will be taking on rivals Mark Piercey and Nick Campbell in the Doubles final.

The Boston Arms duo booked their final berth on Monday following a mammoth two-hour showdown against King’s Cross Hurricanes pairing Quill Cheyne and Mark O’Dwyer, which ended with Fry sinking a long, pressured yellow and then the black in a nerve-wracking, final-frame decider.

The Hurricanes might still get the last laugh, however. Piercey and Campbell, who beat King’s Cross Invaders’ Kevin Nunn and Tony Rogers, will be seeking revenge for their team-mates in what promises to be an epic final.
