Decision-makers do not represent citizens’ interests

• THE Queen’s Crescent road closure shows that the decision-making executive in Camden Council does not represent the interests of Camden citizens.
Do the cabinet members have young children to look after, or care daily for elderly residents? Are they physically disabled or do they have employment which relies on the use of a car or other vehicle?
In any case they show little care or empathy for those who are facing these challenges. Despite all their proselytising about active travel, they don’t appear to cycle either.
We need councillors who understand the urgent need to address the climate and ecological emergency by explaining the issues to residents and businesses and implementing effective policies by building consensus.
Unfortunately the way in which the LTN, low traffic neighbourhoods, and cycle lanes have been implemented sows division and creates conflict, and has therefore been counter-productive to addressing the climate emergency.
While fixating on LTNs and cycle lanes the council is failing to take action on other aspects of the emergency that are within its capacity.
For example, the council continues to demolish existing buildings without looking properly at alternatives that involve refurbishment and “retrofitting”.
There is a huge number of poorly performing buildings in Camden that need upgrading, to both reduce carbon dioxide emissions and to adapt to a changing climate.
Camden is, in fact, increasing emissions by demolishing existing buildings unnecessarily and building large numbers of flats for sale in order to fund its building programme.
We know that these “luxury” flats will be marketed to overseas investors and will not help meet housing need in Camden. This process also results in building over green space and playgrounds, which is harming the health and wellbeing of local people.
This needs a complete rethink in order to provide the homes that Camden needs; while, at the same time, addressing the climate and ecological emergency.
Camden councillors, please work with your residents and increase your level of ambition when it comes to carbon emissions the council is currently producing.
