• ON behalf of our local Labour Party branch we point out to readers that the Conservative leadership candidates have so far made spending commitments of some £330billion, while proposing substantial tax cuts.

If local people want services ranging from support for the elderly to buses and swimming pools to remain, a consistent, solid and sensible taxation policy is an absolute necessity. Cutting taxes mainly for the benefit of the wealthy is unreason­able, selfish and self-indulgent.
