Curfew timing brings chaos to the streets

Thursday, 1st October 2020

• I HAVE great sympathy for the businesses that are again being hit hard and also for their clientele, (Covid curfew leaves pubs devastated, September 24).

There is certainly no science behind these new measures and only a naïve assumption that 10pm will flick a switch in people’s minds. I witnessed the reverse on Friday evening.

Having enjoyed a splendid curry, we dutifully vacated our table at 9.55pm and emerged onto a scene that can only be described as chaos. Parkway was more akin to Glastonbury than the start of a sombre curfew.

Anyone familiar with Parkway will know that it is lined on both sides with numerous bars and eateries and every establishment was emptying at the same time.

Social distancing was impossible on the crowded pavements, the generally good-natured but tipsy masses spilled onto the road and car horns blended poorly with shouting and amateur singing.

I can only imagine what Camden tube station must have been like five to 10 minutes later as everyone moved on to private parties and gatherings. Thankfully I was heading in the opposite direction!
