ARSENAL by Richard Osley
WELL, this is becoming a habit, a nice habit. The Wembley habit. It has now been 24 years since Tottenham Hotspur won a major trophy, and yet here are Arsenal back at Wembley again, just 12 months after last year's glorious FA Cup final success.
Of course, Arsenal have not won the trophy again this time but even if they don't, Spurs fans are going to have to live with Tim Sherwood, the man they sent packing, bouncing around the pitch like a kid who just sucked a helium balloon as an alternative. Either way, they are looooosers.
Although people will tease Arsenal fans for the hard work they made of semi-final against Reading, over almost two seasons the club has laid an unbeaten trail across the FA Cup which has seen to the likes of Liverpool, Everton, Manchester United and, yes, Spurs too.
For all the disappointment that has surrounded Arsenal's failure to chase Chelsea home in the league with greater threat, these cup runs have been made of memories.
Remember Welbeck stealing the match against United, when everybody was talking about Arsenal's inability to win at Old Trafford. Or Theo flashing the 2-0 fingers at the Spurs fans, despite crocked by a serious injury. There was a beano down in Brighton, and an immense high of coming back from two goals down in a final, when all about us were jeers. These have been good times. In the second half of the season, Arsenal have been the best to watch in the league. If they earn us another parade in the sunshine, you may even see me tear up my Wenger Out columns written when the weather was more autumnal.
SPURS by Catherine Etoe
I’M not saying Gran only watches footy to get an eyeful of footballers’ thighs, but she took some calming down on Tuesday after Pep Guardiola’s slacks let rip during Bayern’s obliteration of Porto.
On an excitement scale of one to 10 (10 being the time David Beckham changed his AC Milan shorts on the pitch, one being the time Nicklas Bendtner flashed his green shreddies while playing for Denmark) I’d say it was an eight.
At least this time she didn’t end up in casualty. Still, it was an added bonus in what has been a rather splendid week. I say splendid because the best possible thing happened Saturday… Mauricio Pochettino reminded us that Tottenham aren’t actually supposed to finish in the top four this season.
No, in case you’d forgotten (and I admit I had), we’re in “transition” and it’s next season we’re going to finish in the top four. So hurrah for us.
Luckily there was even more happiness on its way on Sunday when our very own Harry Kane went and scored his 30th goal of the season. Even better, Tottenham only went and beat Newcastle soundly at home. Which means the race for fourth is back on and we might actually finish in the top four after all. Which would be a double hurrah for us if it happened. But let’s remember it’s not a big deal if it doesn’t because we’re in “transition” and aren’t even supposed to be in the top four this season anyway. Hurray.
Well, that’s about it from me folks. So glad that Mauricio was able to cheer us all up with the tremendous news that we’re not even supposed to do that well this season. Hip, hip, hooray to that.
