Virus

HEALTH officials have counted two positive cases of coronavirus in Camden, according to charts released today (Monday).

As numbers affected by the virus across the country continued to rise and Prime Minister Boris Johnson held a COBRA meeting to discuss the United Kingdom’s response, Public Health England published a tally of positive tests in each council jurisdiction so far.

These included two in Camden, and in neighbouring boroughs: Barnet has seen four cases, while Brent and Westminster had recorded three cases each.

Haringey and Islington had yet to see a diagnosis, although 20 cases were still being checked.

A parent of a child at Yerbury School in Tufnell Park, on the Islington side of the borough boundary, has been confirmed to have the Covid-19 virus and is self-isolating at home. He has not been in the school grounds for more than a month.

More than 100,000 people worldwide have so far been diagnosed with coronavirus, which originated in China in the last weeks of 2019, while more than 3,000 have died, including three in the UK.

The government said at lunchtime (Monday) that the country was still in the ‘contain’ phase of its strategy but it was expecting a significant spread and numbers to quickly increase. The next phase is ‘delay’, an attempt to hold the peak of an epidemic back until the end of spring or the summer months when there is less pressure on the health service.

Advice from Public Health England remains to wash hands with hot, soapy water and to avoid touching the face. Anybody with possible symptoms should call 111 rather than head to GP surgeries or walk-in centres.

Meanwhile, Channel 4 newscaster Jon Snow ended 14 days of precautionary self-isolation at his flat in Primrose Hill. He stayed indoors after returning from covering elections in Iran, a country suffering from one of the largest outbreaks.
