Coalitions mean you have to win the argument to win support

• PR takes many forms, as Martin Plaut says, (Proportional representation systems are problematic, June 2), and he goes on to criticise the party list system which, like him, I don’t like; however he fails to mention that there are better options.

He also fails to point out that the UK is one of the very few countries in the world still using first-past the-post, FPTP.

He also offers distant and negative national examples but fails to mention that both Scotland and Northern Ireland use PR successfully and therefore give voters the chance to get representatives that they want and have voted for.

I have yet to see the minority extreme fascist or left wing representation there that he says must be the consequence of PR.

He has picked extreme examples to support his view and rather disingenuously ignored places where PR works well. See the Electoral Reform Society website for more information: https://www.electoral-reform.org.uk/

Yes coalitions are inevitable, but don’t they mean you have to win the argument to get support for your policies? Surely a good thing.
