Climate-vulnerable communities need backing to recover post-pandemic
Thursday, 18th November 2021
• AS residents of, and active volunteers in, Somers Town it is fantastic to learn that our neighbourhood has been awarded £1.4million funding from the Mayor’s Future Neighbourhoods programme to develop a long-term strategy for tackling the climate and ecological emergencies.
We commend the hard work by Camden Council and the community on their successful bid for this funding.
We cannot stress enough how important it is that climate-vulnerable communities such as ours get the targeted funding and outreach needed to ensure all of our residents benefit from the post-Covid-19 pandemic recovery.
Although the recent focus at the UN COP26 climate conference has been on the role of national governments and multinational corporations, the change to a more sustainable society is not just something that can be done to us; we must first and foremost have a transition that is community-led.
We have several groups here in Somers Town doing sterling work making sure that Camden can meet its 2030 environmental and health targets and now, more than ever, local government must be able to fund and support the work they do.
This funding is just one way they are doing so and we look forward to working with our council team in making our neighbourhood greener and cleaner, and keeping our community together.
