HIGHGATE Harrier Chris Beecham put in a star performance in the Southern Championships on Saturday as he bagged his first individual race medal.

The 43-year-old from Finsbury Park has won many team medals with Highgate in his 20-year career with the club but never a solo Southern Championships honour.

Until Saturday when the software developer picked up silver in the prestigious M40 10km race at Claybury in Woodford.

Beecham came home in 34 minutes 55 seconds just behind winner Jeff Pyrah of Hastings Athletics Club in 34.41.

Highgate’s Martin Bright, 45, came 50th overall in 43.43.

Alex Davidson finished 16th in the over-50s race of 104 runners in 38.12 with Highgate team-mate Chris Bailey close behind in 17th in a time of 38.20.
