Graphophone

• YOUR readers might be interested in this 117-year-old leaflet I’ve come across among some family papers.

It advertises an event in Kentish Town where my grandfather, Tom Clark, gave a presentation on the new-fangled Graphophone.

He must have been a sales rep for the firm marketing the thing, which appears to be a variation on the gramophone, where the recording is on rollers instead of a disc.

Note the invitation to attendees to sign The Pledge (“If you have not already done so… before the Nineteenth Century passes away”).
