Were these the good old days? Staffed checkouts [Velela CC BY-SA 3.0]

• READING the two letters regarding supermarkets and checkouts (Self-service not for me! and Checkouts in stores, we’ve been duped…, July 27), I think these show the complete indifference of the companies involved to what customers have made clear they want.

The staff may say “this is the future” or “customers will be in control” as they wait in long queues, stressed out and yelling at customers.

My personal experience with one large company has been to have been told they want customers to learn “how to use self-checkout tills”.

They could at least inform customers of their training days. Up the 21st-century Luddites!
