Camden beware the privatisation of public space
Friday, 23rd August 2019
• THE issue of facial recognition software being used by Argent in King’s Cross is symptomatic of the privatisation of public space that is increasingly common, as local authorities hand over control of public space to developers.
Camden Council had the opportunity of “adopting” the new roads that were created by the redevelopment of the King’s Cross railway lands, as part of the deal with Argent.
This would have resulted in the publicly accessible spaces being properly public and under the control of the council. Let’s hope that Camden doesn’t make the same mistake with the redevelopment of the Kentish Town railway lands.
