Sadiq Khan

London mayor Sadiq Khan should not be let anywhere near the running of London’s buses

• UNFAMILIAR with the No 1 bus route that replaced the 168 late summer, I visited the Transport for London website to check a journey from Bayham Street, Camden Town to Aldwych.

The first result was nonsense. It suggested cycling (17 minutes) and walking (49 minutes) with no other advice offered.

I tried a second time, selecting a different exact destination from the menu but still for Aldwych. The route suggested is a sure indication that a lunatic asylum is now located at City Hall.

Instead of the No 1 bus, which by searching elsewhere I find does go direct from Camden Town to Aldwych (22 minutes), the route offered was:

— 31 bus (back) to Camden Town station – 2 minutes;

— 214 bus to St Pancras International – 7 minutes;

— 91 bus to Aldwych – 15 minutes.

But, of course, those times seem not to takes account of the time one would spend actually waiting for each of those buses, an additional 10 minutes perhaps.

A further search did offer the direct route by the new No 1 bus. Part of the nonsense search result might be owing to the closure of Eversholt Street but TfL should be on top of such things.

It’s not the first time that I have received nonsense advice from the TfL website. London mayor Sadiq Khan, the son of bus driver (he often tells us that), should not be let anywhere near the running of London’s buses.

Londoners and visitors alike deserve better; but he is probably a shoo in. Welcome, soon, to another four years of this dreadful mayor.

LESTER MAY, NW1
