Brexit has no mandate here

• THE New Journal, the BBC and others have asked whether the local elections are about bins or Brexit. We at Camden Liberal Democrats have something to offer on both.
I’m proud to be standing alongside hard-working former councillors such as Tom Simon, Linda Chung, Nancy Jirira, and Cllr Flick Rea. They have proven over decades that we work hard and are committed to our local communities.
If elected, we will fund 20 new PCs or community support officers to help residents feel safe, and deliver hundreds of new homes that people can afford to live in. And yes, we will review Labour’s inflexible approach to rubbish collections, including the restoration of weekly collections where needed, to help clean up our streets.
It’s also important that there is a strong voice for EU citizens and Remainers who feel politically homeless. Both Labour and the Conservatives support a hard Brexit by leaving the single market and the customs union, as well as ending the automatic right of EU citizens to live here, or of UK citizens to live elsewhere in the EU.
We can make a real difference. All 54 of our council candidates will guide Camden’s EU citizens through this disruptive process, and work with our party representatives at all levels to make registering to stay here easier, while continuing to fight for an exit from Brexit altogether.
We can also send a message to both Labour and the Tories that Brexit doesn’t have a mandate in this part of London. Both parties are committed to policies that will be disastrous for the funding of our invaluable public services, with an expected Brexit bill of more than £40bn.
Only we offer an option of ending that damage, thanks to our support for a vote on the final deal with the option to Remain. We’d love to have your readers’ support.
