Boxpark’s big screen plan for Camden Town (but say it’s not just about the football)

Neighbours fear disruption from roaring fans

Celebrations at Boxpark Croydon after England shoot it in the goal

WITH beer splashing everywhere and limbs flying, they are the go-to locations for Match of  the Day editors looking to capture the delight or anguish that comes with watching the England football team.

And now Boxpark, a company which has made its name using recycled shipping containers to create destinations to shop and eat, has confirmed it wants a licence to screen sports at a new site in Camden Town.

The New Journal reported last month how it had taken on the former Buck Street Market site from Labtech and now it has applied for a permission to stay open until midnight at the weekends.

The detail of the application includes plan to screen major events like the World Cup and European Championships.

Their other venues, which includes spots in Croydon, Shoreditch and Wembley, have become known as a popular spot to roar on the national side, and girl band Atomic Kitten have appeared on Boxpark stages singing a reworked hit to football lyrics: Southgate, You’re The One.

In Buck Street, each individual street food unit has its own permission and Box Park needs to bring the whole site under one licence.

But residents groups in the area fear the new plans will lead to more noise and anti-social behaviour.

Kate Gemmell, the chairwoman of the Tenants and Residents Associations Camden Town (TRACT) told the New Journal there were still concerns, despite meeting with Boxpark as part of the pre-consultation process.

She said: “They have a set of conditions that are reasonable but here are two outstanding issues.

“We are concerned there is no capacity on the spaces and they want to put on big sporting events. It will bring in very big and boisterous crowds, and the noise that will be generated will impact.

“You can control music by putting limiters on speakers so there is not any breakout, but when you get a sporting crowd in with lots of singing, cheers, boos – none of it goes through a limiter.”

The current site is made up of containers because nobody wanted to dig foundations while plans to redevelop Camden Underground Station centred on the possibility of a new entrance or exit in Buck Street.

Transport for London has taken on the freehold, to bring in rental income which it suggests could help pay for the upgrade in the future.

A spokesman said: “Each of our Boxpark sites have their own unique offerings with events tailored to suit their location and design.

“We are excited to come to Camden as this site has the unique proposition of being an authentic market layout with over 60 independent retailers across three floors, and unlike our other sites has very little in the way of communal central spaces to host large screenings.

“We are excited to bring a wide range of cultural and community-led events ranging from QuizBox, London’s biggest interactive pub quiz, panel talks and poetry nights to the occasional sports screenings and music events that Camden is famous for.

“However, sports make up less than 1 per cent of our overall business and our key focus here is to create an incredible experience for guests to enjoy all the best of food, drink and retail that Camden has to offer.

“We are looking forward to becoming embedded in the community and have enjoyed engaging with residents about their concerns and how we can address them.”
