A SQUAD of top fighters from St Pancras Amateur Boxing Club made their long-awaited return to the ring at the weekend when they travelled to Denmark to compete in the Hvidovre Box Cup.

Two of the club’s six fighters went the distance as they returned home with gold medals.

But the outing wasn’t just about the winning, as it was the first time anyone had represented St Pancras in almost a year.

The gym in Talacre Road, Kentish Town, is just weeks away from reopening after closing in May last year for refurbishment.

As a warm-up for the big launch the six boxers were allowed to train in their new surroundings in preparation for Denmark.

Senior coach CJ Hussein, who trains the boys alongside Ray “Bully” Ball said: “We’ve got a new coaching staff on board now and we’re looking forward to a prosperous future. We want to get back to winning trophies.”

Light-welterweights Jernair Thompson and Alex Laimable have already secured gold medals for the new trophy cabinet.

Debutant Thompson beat Christian Hvolbot in the semi-finals before going on to overcome Jesper Ibabao Poulsen in the final.

Afterwards the delighted 23-year-old said: “To win a gold medal in my first competition is a great achievement. I just wanted to go out there and do my best, but to actually bring back gold was unreal.”

In only his second fight for the Saints, Alex Laimable also struck gold after beating Nicolai Fick Sorensen.

The highly-rated 15-year-old said: “The feeling of winning gold is indescribable.”

Charlie Worley, Daniel Troy, Ricky Redhead and Jordan Joseph also all put in good showings for St Pancras.
