Bollards were brought in without public scrutiny
Thursday, 11th June 2020
• I WAS disturbed to learn from Sean Titley (Installation of these bollards is wrong on a number of counts, May 28) that these have been installed at the junction of Savernake and Constantine roads, preventing through-traffic.
This has apparently been done without public consultation or any democratic scrutiny.
As long ago as 1985 some residents of Savernake-Constantine first tried to divert their through-traffic on to Agincourt Road.
But this was done in an open and proper manner, sponsored by a councillor, and was rejected after a public consultation for which residents of Agincourt Road were able to mobilise. Now it seems the same end has finally been achieved by misusing emergency powers.
The letter Mr Titley refers to was not seen by Agincourt Road residents.
It is particularly dishonest to justify this action by reference to Gospel Oak school in Savernake Road, when it will push more traffic past Fleet Primary on Agincourt Road.
How exactly was this decision arrived at? We might expect that our councillors would also want to know.
