A car submerged in Whitestone Pond [George Eva]

A BMW has crashed into Whitestone Pond next to Hampstead Heath this afternoon (Thursday).

Police were called at 3.29pm to North End Way after members of the public had been helping at the scene. The fire brigade and ambulance service also attended.

A man in his 30s who was in the vehicle has been arrested on suspicion of drink-driving. He was also arrested for assaulting an emergency worker.

He has now been taken to hospital as a precaution.

Work to remove the vehicle is ongoing and long queues stretching to Swiss Cottage have formed.
