‘If fires on Hampstead Heath are not stopped now I fear a disaster in the dry of the summer’

• ON my morning walk on Thursday I was shocked to find a bonfire still smouldering among the bushes just off the path along the southern fence to Kenwood.

Logs had been arranged around the fire and there were beer bottles scattered about. Clearly there had been an illicit night-time gathering.

I don’t particularly care about the health of the miscreants in this illegal gathering. But I do care about the fire risk to Hampstead Heath and Kenwood ancient woodland.

If fires are not stopped now in the spring I fear a disaster in the dry of the summer. What are City of London parks and recreation department doing about stopping this?
