NEW London Assembly member Anne Clarke said this evening (Saturday) that her election win was partly because Camden was proving to be a “popular administration” under Labour rule and had performed well during the coronavirus pandemic.

She was speaking after a comfortable win in the Barnet and Camden constituency at the London elections.

Ms Clarke will take over from the retiring Andrew Dismore after polling more than 13,000 votes ahead of her nearest rival, the Conservative candidate Roberto Weeden-Sanz.

The twin borough constituency was once held by the Conservatives but this is now Labour’s third win on the bounce.

”I think in general we’re seeing a move away from the Conservatives in Barnet. I think we are seeing the rejection of the values of people like Brian Coleman, she said.

“I think there is credit to Camden too for doing a wonderful job during the pandemic and for a number of years now it has been a popular administration.”

Mr Coleman was watching on as the results were declared in the Palm Court at Alexandra Palace. He had been the former Conservative assembly member in the seat, before his run came to an end at the hands of former MP Andrew Dismore.

Brian Coleman watches on

He remains one of the most outspoken politicians in north London, always ready with a barb on Twitter.Labour campaigners were particularly angry that he referred to her as the ‘Cricklewood  housewife’.

Asked why Labour performed well in north London but appeared to be struggling in other regions of the UK at this week’s elections, Ms Clarke said:“It’s quite an interesting picture and that parties in administration have done well: like Labour in Wales, which has been been brought back in in huge numbers.

“So have the SNP and so have the Conservatives across England. I think we have seen people voting in the administrations across the country. I suspect that’s what it is.”

Mr Coleman tweeted this evening (Saturday): “Much as i would like to think so has it really got anything to do with me ? Or is Mrs Clarke just a little bit obsessed?”
