Austerity is what we do not need

Thursday, 8th June 2017

• IF Theresa May is elected with her record and plans to continue austerity and cuts to public services, the only way is down – down will go the wages of all those in the public sector: the police, firefighters, nurses and the rest of our vital people; down will go investment in the country’s future; down will go social care, council housing and more.

Labour’s alternative: to tax the better-off and big companies a little bit more and use that revenue to rebuild neglected public services and to invest in vital infrastructure projects across the UK would benefit us all.

The value of this approach was recently confirmed by over 120 senior economists including professors from Oxford, Cambridge and the Open universities, who concluded that continued austerity will damage our economy while Labour’s plans would lay the foundations for strong growth in the years ahead.
