As a parent of an A-level student, I feel let down – and so does he

• AS a parent of a sixth-form student at La Swap I feel profoundly let down by the support of these schools for their first year A-level students.

Why is Sainte Union school still closed? Government guidelines set out expectations that teachers will see their students before the summer break, but the doors are firmly closed.

While private schools, fearing for their own existence, provided rapid and extensive online learning, the response from La Swap was pathetic and chaotic.

Excuses such as safeguarding and lack of IT were offered but the private sector simply asked parents to sign a disclaimer and where students misbehaved they were excluded.

If children didn’t have laptops then surely those pupils could be targeted on return? My son is now so behind with his work I worry he will not be able to access further education. He admits to being “totally demotivated”.

As a teacher, who has worked all through lockdown at a children’s centre in Islington, and as a lone parent with two other school age children, I find it astounding other state educators do not take their responsibility to their students more seriously.
