Artists need support, let’s have a new Camden Open

Friday, 4th June 2021

• I WAS so pleased to see Steve Roper’s letter (Artists need support, May 27), both to read about his ideas for a new form of Camden Open exhibition and because it’s good to know he’s still based here and keen to create new opportunities for artists.

Steve is a brilliant curator. In 2006, when he was Camden’s exhibition officer, he curated an exhibition of my 1970s photographs at Swiss Cottage library. His professionalism and expertise ensured it was a great success and many people came to see their younger selves.

After a year of Covid’s temporary, and in some cases permanent, shuttering of so many arts venues, I hope the council takes up Steve’s suggestions and invite him to take a lead in planning a new Camden Open. As he says, artists need support and the chance to be included. Now more than ever.
